This episode, we play around with polygons in All Our Asias, a game with a striking aesthetic reminiscent of the PS1 era.
And then we we talk for far too long about Monster Hunter World and Metal Gear Solid Survive.
Horrors and thrillers are somewhat Marmite genres. Beyond the hate it or love it motif – who am I, the Game? – the analogy relates more to whether the genre works for you or not.
For me, Alien: Isolation was a game that exercised tension. For others, it was a game that tested a player’s bowel controls. For some reason scary games struggle to scare me. Bear this in mind when reading the following.
Shinji Mikami is considered a legend in videogame circles, and with Resident Evil and Vanquish under his belt how could he not? Sadly, for those hoping a return to what made the now flailing Resident Evil series exciting, The Evil Within is not it. It is not scary. It is a slightly broken, kind of alright game with an absolutely dog-shit narrative. It opens to a very weak first hour but quickly finds its mediocre size 8 feet.
Just a little over one year from its original release, GTA V Remastered is finally out after months of rumour and teasing.
I’m only one and half hours in so far – all I could squeeze in after work – and it is pretty much how I remembered it; much like The Last of Us Remastered, this games looks how you thought it did back in 2013. Luckily, the graphical prowess of the current-gen consoles helps us forget the limitations of the PS3 and Xbox 360.
The internet has already revealed much more than I can about Rockstar’s additions, as the internet obviously has a lot more free time than I do. Aside from the graphical bump, secrets are popping up everywhere on Incy Wincy’s web; there’s even a peyote-fuelled trip that lets you be a chicken.
It’s been a long wait for a good game based on the Alien franchise, and after Gearbox stabbed the hearts of fans with a rusty Pitchford – sorry, pitchfork, the wait appeared eternal. Then Creative Assembly announced Alien: Isolation. Early impressions revealed it as a taught stealth game with an emphasis on survival, taking its inspiration from 1979’s Alien and games like Amnesia equally.
Isolation is a polished and faithful representation of the universe; the unassuming but somewhat speckled environments of the film transfer to videogames perfectly. The super-sharp visuals that sci-fi fans have come to expect and appreciate are present and in top form. Continue reading
When I first sat down to play Destiny, I had readied myself with six A4 pages to jot notes on. After a few weeks playing I have only scribbled on three of those pages. This doesn’t indicate how good or bad Bungie’s latest is, but it certainly shows how little there is to say about it.
Destiny has taken a lifetime to release; from its leak, announcement and subsequent drip-fed reveal, the game has had a slow and well-paced development period. And it worked. Who wasn’t intrigued by Destiny?
So the real question is, for a game that has seemingly taken a lifetime to develop, how did it end up so lifeless?
It took until 12.00 BST for me to realise just how much I did not want to be in work that day. I was three and a half an hours in with five and a half hours to go. I whispered to myself, ‘Destiny really is awaiting.’
To me, Destiny is an mmos, a massively multiplayer online something – which I much prefer to Bungie’s self coined ‘shared-world shooter’. It is Bungie’s first new IP since Halo graced Xbox and PC in 2001. It is essentially Borderlands meets Halo with Peter Dinklage and
moon wizards. And I care for non of them.
So why am I so excited?
Maybe it is the lack of games I have for my ps4. Maybe it is because I am very unfamiliar with, and quite intimidated by, mmos and am therefore excited by this strange beast. Maybe it is because work is kind of dull.
Whatever it is, it is damn exciting. Now excuse me as I rush home, probably to find a launch-day update waiting for me. (Edit: Of course there was an update.)
